While Shopify, the eCommerce retailer’s favorite platform adopted a ‘self-hosted, all-in-one’ approach, Magento, its counterpart and competitor has more complex features. A huge number of people vote for Shopify over Magento because of its ease of use features, smooth store maintenance options, quick customization possibilities, and scalability attributes.

However, in the process of migration, e-tailers face umpteen troubles, which of course have solutions. This blog will give you a deep understanding of how to effectively migrate from Magento to Shopify.
Read on.

Data Importing Concerns:

Causes: Tools for migrating a store’s data from a different platform to Shopify is perfect for a small business, however; stores with multi-line of products can find the shift insanely troublesome.  The data is moved in bulk as a single CSV file and there is no facility to import products, categories, or attribute files separately.

Solutions: You definitely need expert help in adjusting and solving data transfer issues manually. Obviously, small store owners can use migration tools such as LitExtension or Cart2Cart, but if yours is a store with 100s of variants, an individualized approach is necessary.

Shopify experts can help you with:

  • Developing specialized tools that solve migration issues
  • Choosing paid or free themes to improve the design and outlook of the store while switching off Magento.

Be Prepared:

Though to Shopify provides options for data backup in case of migration process failures, it is better to make sure the data is saved safely. For this, in the Magenta platform, find the ‘Admin’ sidebar, select ‘system’, then choose ‘tools’, and finally, opt for the ‘backups’ option. You can make a complete backup or individualized file backup.

Multiple Product Variants Incorporation Concerns:

Causes: One of the regular Shopify troubleshooting questions people ask is ‘How to migrate products with multiple variants?’ or ‘Will adding more variants of a product to an existing shop cause disorganization? The issue is that many new Shopify users don’t know how to work around ‘Shopify product variants’. If Magento supported product variation addition without a specific limit, Shopify keeps a limit of 100.

Solutions: For a given product, there can be variations such as sizes, types, materials, or colors. For example, a shopper searching online for a Tee Shirt would want to purchase a single item with different colors or sizes (*if available). But the million-dollar question asked by the new Shopify store owner is ‘how to split the variants and manage them on the Shopify platform?

With Shopify:

  • You can add only up to 100 variants of a product.
  • You can convert each variant into a new product.
  • You have to add the product that you want to split to the import list, then select a split product from the ‘more action’ option on the Shopify platform and split in a way that you need. The split can be based on color or size or some other attributes.

Experts adopt many techniques to avoid the Shopify product variation limits. But one of the top tactics is to consider converting one of the dimensions (size/ color, etc.) into a product instead of a variant. Then links are added to this new formed product indicating that it is a part of a category of a product.

For instance, you want to sell jeans with 100 plus variants and your Shopify limit is restricting you to add a new Jeans color variation, say ‘Blue faded’. What you can do is to treat the ‘blue faded’ as a new product and links of the jeans range under which it falls can be added to it.

The second most effective way is to use the external to Shopify-recognized apps. One such app is called as ‘Bold’, what this does is to edit theme data and add as many as variants to the existing product data. But one has to research thoroughly to understand if the app will work perfectly for a specific range of products or services, because there are chances that the merchants use the external app to see the complete collapse of other integrated apps and solutions.

And if you are a top retailer with 1000s of variations and product ranges, the only way to provide the customers with the right shopping experience is to rely on a VL OMNI. This is a top data integration app based on iPaaS solution. VL OMNI incorporates various tags and front-end fixes to handle high volume data with ease.

(Be Cautious: If product variations are not charted well, the sales conversions may not happen as per the calculations. A study by Conversion pointed out that only 8% of the page traffic actually converts. The percentage goes down even further, if a product page confuses a shopper.)

Inventory Concerns:

CausesThe common inventory issues that an e-tailer face on Shopify are while performing raw material inventory management, reordering, batch/expiry/serial tracking, and during extracting reports and analytics. One of the drawbacks with Shopify inventory is that there is no tracking option for raw materials.  So, if a retailer is selling a product made of many raw materials, he or she has to manually track the purchase.

Also, if a seller is low on a product to sell, magento Shopify don’t have a feature to alert the person. The great trouble is for FMCG or medical companies that have to track batch numbers and expiry dates. Sadly, here too, Shopify demands the sellers to manually update the spreadsheets.

There is also trouble while you pull out sales reports. Yes, Shopify provides options to track the cost of the items, but this will be accurate only if the price is consistent.

Solutions: Rely on an external app that would help in complex inventory management. There are many out there such as Stock SyncTradeGeckoSellbriteKatana etc. These apps will help in purchase order management, manage raw materials, etc.

Be Cautious: Well, Magento has more features to have complete control over inventory than on Shopify. So, if you are not sure about Shopify inventory management, hire a Shopify expert in your team.
